The streaking Binghamton women’s tennis team will play at home tonight for just the second time in the winter season. The Bearcats are undefeated in dual matches so far, and will look to continue that streak against the Highlanders from the New Jersey Institute of Technology tonight at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
The Bearcats have the momentum coming in, after a dominating performance against the Colgate Red Raiders on Feb. 10. The Bearcats swept the doubles matches and grabbed four of the singles matches to secure their fourth straight dual match victory.
The Highlanders come into town off a loss to Temple University in a 6-1 decision Saturday in Tenafly, New Jersey. Despite the loss, NJIT is 5-3 on the season.
The Bearcats 4-0 record is their best start since making the jump to Division I five years ago, and an example of the program’s growth into a legitimate Division I contender that can compete with top programs.
The victory over Colgate came after two failed attempts early in Binghamton’s tenure at Division I. Colgate is a competitive school in women’s tennis and the Bearcats’ victory helps prove that Binghamton’s ascension into the upper echelon of tennis is no joke.
Drama continues to be unfolding for seniors Zeynep Altinay and her teammate Lya Kushnirovich. Altinay has 77 career singles wins for Binghamton, the school record, while Kushnirovich is second at 75. Hopefully the two will continue to run up their match wins, not only for the sake of the team, but to give fans who love team rivalries something to cheer about.
The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
