With his shoulder injury finally behind him and a Colonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week award under his belt, 149-pounder Kyle Fried will lead the Binghamton University wrestling team into three meets this weekend.
The Bearcats (9-10) are scheduled to travel to East Stroudsburg University (3-8) for a 7 p.m. meet Friday and then back home for meets with Franklin & Marshall College (5-7) and Columbia University (3-3) in the West Gym at 5 and 7 p.m. respectively on Saturday.
Fried’s 3-0 performance helped BU win two of three meets in Binghamton’s last outing, at the Ithaca Duels last Saturday. Binghamton fell 31-6 to Eastern Michigan University in its opening match before defeating Ithaca College, 21-12, and Mercyhurst College, 25-13.
“Kyle right now has been doing the best of anybody,” said BU head coach Pat Popolizio. “He’s gotten over some injuries now and he’s healthy and it’s time to start focusing here on the last stretch of the season.”
Fried, ranked 19th in the nation within his class according to the most recent InterMat Division I Coaches Poll, is 11-1 in dual meets this season. He was named a CAA Wrestler of the Week, along with Jesse Strawn of Old Dominion University, for competition between Jan. 29 and Feb. 4.
In the middle of the fall semester, Fried attempted to play through a shoulder injury, but it kept nagging — so much so that he had to miss the Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC Greensboro at the end of December. Finally, Fried took time off until his shoulder was 100 percent, and he has been on top of his game since.
With just three dual meets remaining after this weekend, the focus for Fried isn’t weekly awards, but to prepare for the CAA Championship, held in early March.
“It’s getting close to the end of the season and my goals are set pretty high,” Fried said. “It’s nice for them to award me with that, but by no means do I let that overshadow what I want to accomplish at the end of the year.”
