Wake up, Yankee fans. The New York Yankees’ reign as the kings of baseball is officially over. It’s the Red Sox’s turn now.

Following their second World Series win in four years, the Red Sox have finally climbed out of the dungeon to take their rightful place on the baseball throne. Sadly for New Yorkers, the Red Sox aren’t Boston’s only team to be dominating the sports world. With the Patriots on their way to an undefeated season and the Celtics restocked with the likes of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, it will be another century before New York wins a championship in one of the major sports. But don’t you frown; you can always count on the Rangers to bring home a Cup in the near distant future of 2048.

As amazing as the turnaround has been in Boston, the increase in crying by New York sports fans, with regard to the plummet of their once storied franchises, has been even more dramatic. Rather than accept a shift in power, New Yorkers choose to hate on the accomplishments of Boston’s rising teams. Yes, Manny Ramirez may have the dirtiest helmet in the majors and his 400-foot single in the playoffs isn’t a great example of playing hard, but unlike PayRod, he can hit in the playoffs and doesn’t bitch-smack opposing pitchers racing him to the bag. Orlando Cabrera of the Angels had it right when he called Yankee fans a bunch of mean-spirited losers, saying that ‘they don’t appreciate good baseball. They just appreciate the Yankees beating up on everybody.’

Apparently that attitude is contagious because no one loves to hate on the Patriots more than the sorry Jets fans who thought a trip to the playoffs with a team of scrubs last season meant a Superbowl victory this year. Eric Mangini coached by Bill Belichick’s side for years and never made a peep, but the second his team gets killed on opening day, he has to whine to the media about the ‘cheating’ Patriots. How very mature of you, Mangenius. Cheating is OK; having others cheat against you is not. I’m quite confused by that concept. The reality is that while the Patriots clearly broke the rules, to be called out by a gutless ex-coach shows a clear lack of respect. If there’s one thing that New York fans lack, it’s respect.

The Red Sox had their hearts broken for 86 years, but they have always respected the clutch hitting of the likes of Jeter. Now it’s your turn, New York fans. Respect the Sox’s ability to come back from 3-0 and 3-1 deficits. Respect the Patriots. They are on pace for the greatest season in the history of the NFL. And finally, don’t cry if the Celtics take the East this season. The Knicks couldn’t beat a Division III high school team led by a blind kid with no arms.

Cheering for a loser isn’t so bad, as long as your favorite team isn’t the Cubs.
