Student Association elections have a long history of mudslinging and scandal at Binghamton University, and a resolution proposed at last Monday’s SA meeting appears to be the beginning to this year’s controversy.
A grievance, entitled “An Ounce of Prevention,” was filed by SA representatives Eric Katz, Diane Napolitano and Elana Yudman against current Executive Vice President Dave Belsky. The resolution, which accused Belsky of using his position to illegally campaign in the form of visits made to two community college council meetings on Jan. 31, called for an official censure of the e-board member.
The resolution led to a lengthy debate at the Assembly meeting, in which points were raised by both sides, including the question of whether a candidate can technically campaign before an election season begins and the ambiguity of some of the SA bylaws.
Ultimately, the resolution was defeated in a secret ballot, and no action was taken against Belsky. Further action may come in the future.
