Overzealous Binghamton University fans marred Saturday’s America East championship basketball game with silly string and “buttocks,” according to police.
Before the Bearcats hit the court, officers on patrol responded to a fight at the Events Center between a 21-year-old male and female, said Investigator Matt Rossie of Binghamton’s New York State University Police. The female student told officers she and her friends had camped out in the line overnight, and that a group of students had crowded in front of them in the morning.
The female claimed a Bud Light can was thrown at her, so she “picked it up and threw it back” at the male student she thought had thrown it, Rossie said. The can cut his forehead.
The female sprayed silly string at the male, who then threw the string back at her, witnesses said. The female, who appeared intoxicated, then picked up the beer can and threw it at the male. The incident occurred about 9:45 a.m.
The male student was taken to Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton for his cut and wants to press charges.
But that’s not all.
During halftime, a 21-year-old male BU student was reported to have been “having words” with UMBC fans, telling them “UMBC was struggling,” Rossie said. He then began having a heated argument with UMBC coach Randy Monroe, witnesses said. Officers advised the student to remain in his seat or he would be escorted out the Events Center.
After the game, the same student was seen with a group of BU fans yelling at UMBC fans. Officers told BU fans to disperse and for UMBC fans to get back on their bus. Before leaving, the 21-year-old student “dropped his shorts and revealed his buttocks” to the UMBC fans, Rossie said. Officers told the student to leave the area and no charges were pressed.
