Al Walker’s squad went 6-1 in the month of January and is hoping to have the same success in February.

After a devastating loss Saturday at home against Albany, the men’s basketball team will travel to face America East opponent UMBC on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

“We have to put that behind us,” said Walker, on Saturday’s loss. “When you take four games down to the last possession, you can’t win them all.”

The Retrievers (7-12, 3-5 AE), who sit tied in seventh place with Hartford, are led by senior John Zito and sophomore Brian Hodges. Zito, a 6-foot-6 forward, is averaging 14 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Hodges, a 6-3 guard, averages 12.2 points per game and shoots 80 percent from the free-throw line.

UMBC had a huge win earlier this month on its home court when they defeated Boston in overtime by one point. Since that game, the Retrievers have lost five of their last six games, but are 6-3 this season on their home court.

“They are very good at home and play a very good zone defense,” Walker said. “We have to shoot well and rebound better.”

The Bearcats are in last place in the America East in field goal percentage (37.1 percent) and sixth in rebounding margin (-2.2), but did manage to win six straight games.

“I hope February can be just as productive for us,” Walker said.
