MVP: Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks. He showed his leadership skills last year more than ever before, and despite the voters’ apparent obsession with Canada, he deserves to win this award. He’ll lead the Mavs to another great season.

Rookie of the Year: Tyrus Thomas, Bulls. The high-flyer from LSU should be able to thrive in Chicago with opposing defenses focusing on Ben Wallace, allowing Thomas to spread his wings early in his career.

Coach of the Year: Gregg Popovich, Spurs. In a year with no outright favorite to win the NBA title, the Spurs will continue their remarkable consistency, and their fearless leader through the last 10 seasons will get rewarded for it.

Most Improved Player: Darko Milicic, Magic. Yes, that Darko Milicic. Now that we know Larry Brown really is that bad with young players, look for him to improve in his first full year in Orlando.

Surprise Team: Houston Rockets. If Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady stay healthy, Bonzi Wells and Shane Battier should help Houston compete again in the West.
