Even though Binghamton is set to host the America East tournament next month, expect quite a send off when the Bearcats take on UMBC Monday at the Events Center.
In a season that started slow and saw the fan base start to lose hope, the Binghamton men’s basketball team sits in second place going into its regular-season home finale against the Retrievers.
The Bearcats’ three graduating seniors — Sebastian Hermenier, Andre Heard and Schafer Jackson — will be honored during a pregame ceremony.
During his last two seasons at Binghamton, Hermenier was always recognized more for his hustle and leadership than for his offensive contributions. But Hermenier has picked up his scoring load as of late (he has been in double figures in all but one game this month) and has been clutch from the free-throw line.
Heard, who has been a top scorer in the America East all season after being selected to the preseason all-conference team, continues to lead the Bearcats on their recent offensive explosion. Jackson, who transferred to BU along with Heard after his sophomore year, has seen limited playing time this season despite being a fan favorite.
After Hermenier, Heard and Jackson are recognized for their contributions to the Binghamton basketball program, the Bearcats will look to get some revenge on the Retrievers come game time.
UMBC is the only team in the conference other than Albany to defeat the Bearcats this season, winning in Maryland 78-74 on Feb. 2. The Retrievers have struggled on the road though, going 1-11 thus far. UMBC is led by senior forward John Zito and sophomore guard Brian Hodges, who average 13.9 and 12.4 points, respectively.
