With their walls plastered with concert promos and flyers, and their library without books, WHRW’s studio in the basement bowels of the New University Union is almost always full of people who are enthusiastic about working for the station.
WHRW 90.5 FM is a ‘free format’ station. DJs can play whatever they want, which means there is a variety of shows that appeal to all different audiences. WHRW is the perfect place for any music fanatic, be they listeners or radio personalities.
If you are looking for anything rock, then tune in every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for ‘Rock Steady.’ Sophomore Jenna Rosenberg, who aspires to have a career in radio, and her partner, sophomore Jackie Wallach, created this program.
They play all types of rock music, from classic rock to emo. They also talk to their listeners about whatever they feel like.
During one show, the two DJs chatted about the episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ that aired the night before.
‘We just have fun with it,’ Rosenberg said.
Don’t be shy to call in and talk with them as well, especially to request a song. They said they are always happy to hear from their fans and find out what they are really interested in.
Sometimes they’ll give away tickets to concerts on campus; this year they gave away tickets to the Gym Class Heroes show. Their show has been going on for a year now and the girls plan to keep ‘rocking on’ next semester.
If rock isn’t your thing and you are into more cultural and worldly music, then Navah Fuchs has the show for you. ‘Mayhem, Mirth and Madness’ airs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. every Friday. Fuchs plays music that she enjoys, like rock, Celtic and world music.
‘What I like to play personifies the balance I like to dictate,’ Fuchs said.
Fuchs said the show is relatively new; she started this particular format this semester and plans to continue educating her listeners about different cultural music next semester.
If you are looking for music with pop edge, then junior Robin Sanchez is sure to have something you will enjoy. Her show ‘Pop Rocks!’ airs every Saturday from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
‘I generally play whatever I feel like,’ Sanchez said. ‘I try to play lots of new stuff that I don’t think is really out there or getting the attention it should be.’
It’s not a radio talk show, so Sanchez said she keeps the chatting down to banter between her, her apprentices and whatever guests may be in the station.
‘I stress listener involvement, trying to get people to call in and tell me what they want to hear,’ she said. ‘I’m open to anything ‘ we love requests and shout-outs.’
WHRW seems to be dedicated to making its audience happy, but they also just want to have fun. There are so many different personalities that every music genre is covered.
‘It’s such a nice family,’ Fuchs said.
