Injuries helped Binghamton University wrestling sputter to a 1-3 finish at the Journeyman/Brute Northeast Duals on Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College.

The Bearcats (1-4), who were without two nationally-ranked starts in three of four matches and had to forfeit at heavyweight in all of them, defeated American International 42-6, but lost 47-3 to No. 3 Oklahoma State, 35-10 to Lehigh and 35-9 to Appalachian State.

Binghamton senior Kyle Fried, ranked 14th in the nation in the 149-pound class, notched Binghamton’s lone win against OSU, 4-2 over Quinten Fuentes, but it was costly. Fried was injured in the process and did not compete in the following three matches.

Against American International, the Bearcats had three pins and two major decisions.

Anwar Goeres, Binghamton’s 141-pound sophomore, was 3-0 with two pins and a major decision. He was quick, too, taking just one minute, 36 seconds to end his match with American International’s Sam Gauvine.

Goeres followed up with a 13-2 major decision against Lehigh and another pin against Appalachian State in 3:50.

Binghamton’s Tyler Malmberg, a 125-pound freshman, and Corey Waite, a 197-pound sophomore, were 2-1 and 2-2 respectively.

Binghamton takes on Boston University on at 5 p.m. Dec. 8 in Albany.

SOCCER

The first round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship saw one America East team move on and another make an early exit.

Vermont (9-9-3), the AE tournament champion, edged host Dartmouth 4-3 in penalty kicks on Saturday in Hanover, N.H. The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.

The Catamounts play third-seeded UConn (18-2-1) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Storrs, Conn.

Vermont goalkeeper Roger Scully made two saves in the shootout: on the first, Big Green shooter Craig Henderson, and the last, Dani Rothenburg.

The Catamounts trailed 1-0 until 26 seconds remained in regulation, when Connor Tobin tied the match on a penalty kick after a foul at the top of the penalty area.

Dartmouth (11-4-3) had led for almost the entire match, after going up 1-0 just 54 seconds in on Michael Keats’ successful penalty kick after a handball.

Dartmouth out-shot the Catamounts 20-10.

Boston (9-7-4), which received an at-large bid, fell to host UMass 2-1 in Amherst, Mass. on Friday. Stuart Amick and Michael Jejna scored for UMass (14-7-1) in the 24th and 67th minutes, respectively. Boston’s Derek Puerta cut the lead 2-1 with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.

The Terriers nearly pulled out a comeback with 40 seconds left, but Andrej Bjegovic’s potential game-tying shot banged off the post.

Multiple America East teams had not advanced to the national tournament since 1996.
