The men’s tennis season came to an end over the weekend as the Bearcats were defeated by UMBC on Saturday in the semifinals of the America East tournament.
After defeating Hartford 4-0 in the quarterfinals on Friday, fourth-seeded Binghamton lost 4-2 to top-seeded UMBC. The Bearcats, who finished the year 9-11, managed to beat second-seeded Boston University 4-1 in the third place match.
‘Going into the tournament, we felt we had as good a chance as any,’ said first-year head coach Adam Cohen. ‘It was a tough year with injuries, but we still thought we had a shot to win it.’
Junior Alex Dobrin finished the season 19-7, posting one of the Bearcats’ two points against UMBC at No. 2 singles. Freshman Pierre Clavel managed the other point at No. 3 singles winning in straight sets.
After losing the doubles point against Boston, the Bearcats managed to win four singles matches for the victory, avenging a 4-3 loss earlier in the season to Boston.
‘I am proud of the way the guys competed,’ Cohen said. ‘We only played a couple matches with a full lineup, so it was hard to expect a whole lot, but we are looking forward to next year adding some new bodies and more depth.’
On Friday, the team defeated Hartford 4-0 in the first round of the tournament. Pierre Clavel, Justin Salkin, Jon Bonnet and Reina Kohtake all won their matches, with Kohtake winning 6-0, 6-0.
