For the Binghamton women’s soccer team, home really is where the heart is.

Coming off an impressive 4-0 win versus Wagner last Sunday and a 1-1 tie against Syracuse last week — both home games — the Bearcats will square off against Fairleigh Dickinson today and look to remain undefeated in their own backyard.

The Bearcats (1-3-2) will take on a struggling Knights (1-4-0) team that has allowed 18 goals in five games. In its last contest on Sunday, Fairleigh Dickinson fell 3-0 to rival Rutgers.

Binghamton will be out to avenge its 2-1 loss in a double overtime thriller at Fairleigh Dickinson last season.

The injury bug could prove to be a factor for the Bearcats in this game; with several players questionable for today health is likely to play a role in the match.

“We had five players battling injuries during our recent win against Wagner,” said head coach Jeff Leightman. “The key to our success is getting healthy.”

Despite obstacles that may stand in their way, confidence is high for the Bearcats as they prepare for FDU.

“We’re looking to step on the field and win,” Leightman said.

The home crowd, however, should work in the Bearcats’ favor, as Leightman also acknowledged how frustrating it is playing Fairleigh Dickinson on the road.

Binghamton will be relying on playmakers Kelly Burnham, and sisters Betsy and Mackenzie Harris, the three of whom combined for two assists and two goals in the win against Wagner. Goalies Kristie Bowers and Kristy Doerner are also looking to shut out the opposition for the second straight game.

The Bearcats have three more non-conference games before America East play begins, heading to Brooklyn on Sunday to take on the Long Island University Blackbirds (2-4-0) of the Northeastern Conference. The Blackbirds are currently undefeated at home and have played an impressive non-conference slate, including teams like Stanford and Pacific. Binghamton came away with a 1-0 overtime victory against LIU early last season, when BU forward Danielle White deflected a shot in at the 99th minute.

Coach Leightman and the team know how important it is to prepare for the conference challenge and have learned not to take any opponent lightly in the process. The America East conference is stronger than ever, as rivals Albany, Vermont and Stony Brook have all made improvements. If health permits, the Bearcats should be able to compete and remain a force within the conference.

Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. today at West Gym Field.
