Last season the Colgate Red Raiders used a second-half run to end the Binghamton University men’s basketball team’s three-game winning streak in Hamilton.

Wednesday night at the Events Center, the Bearcats (1-6) will hope to avoid a second-half surge from the Red Raiders (5-3) and end a five-game losing streak ‘ currently tied for the longest streak in school history.

‘We’re looking to share the game,’ said BU head coach Kevin Broadus. ‘We have to have our teammates back and play together. If we play together, we’ll win the game.’

Colgate is coming off a 76-73 win at Cornell, a team that beat BU last week and was picked to win the Ivy League. The win snapped Colgate’s three-game losing streak, which had been punctuated with a 94-63 beat-down at Notre Dame. The Red Raiders opened the season 4-0.

The Raiders won 78-70 last season behind 23 points from senior guard Jon Simon. Current Colgate senior Kendall Chones chipped in 12 points in that game, the only other Red Raider to reach double figures.

‘I’ve looked at all of last year’s games ‘ one thing I know is we’re gonna play hard,’ Broadus said. ‘This Colgate team is also playing hard.’

This season, junior Kyle Roemer has been a star for the Red Raiders, ranking second in the Patriot League with 19 points per game.

One problem for Binghamton all season has been rebounding. The Bearcats were out-rebounded 43-29 at Rider. Colgate is currently second in the Patriot League in rebounding. One reason for the Bearcats’ inefficiency on the boards has been the absence of centers Jaan Montgomery and Minja Kovacevic. While he may not play against Colgate, Montgomery is very close to returning.

‘[His return] is coming,’ Broadus said. ‘He had a great day at practice [Monday]. That’s his biggest thing, we have to get him in shape. He’s much needed right now.’

While waiting for Montgomery and Kovacevic, the Bearcats have been using a combination of Lazar Trifunovic, Reggie Fuller and Gio Olomo at the center. Fuller and Trifunovic started against Rider.

The five-game losing streak began two weeks ago at Chicago State and has spanned four road games and a home game. Broadus said the return home could be what ends the streak.

‘We’ve played [four out of five] games on the road ‘ that’s one of the hardest things to do in basketball,’ he said. ‘We welcome a home game right now.’

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Events Center.
