Forget writing a diary entry, over the past two days I have struggled to even write an away message. Losing a championship game is hard to take. Losing two in a row is a nightmare. Losing two in identical circumstances is unbelievable.
Sure, everyone suffers disappointment in sports. Everyone has a single hard luck story that they will try to console you with. They even produce movies on the topic, with Friday Night Lights springing to mind. The difference for the men’s soccer team being, the hard luck story which we have had to deal with for a year, came back and unfolded again on Saturday night.
So why was there no sequel to the true story of Friday Night Lights? Easy. The team probably won the championship the next year. Or maybe they never made the playoffs. I bet you they didn’t lose the game in the same heart-breaking way as they did the year before. Let’s face it; if they brought out a sequel with the exact same ending you probably would dismiss it as unbelievable.
Unbelievable is the only word to describe Saturday night. Unbelievable is holding a lead with less than five minutes to go, in two consecutive years and have the opposition tie the game. Unbelievable is going on to lose both games in a penalty shootout. Unbelievable is sitting in a room with your teammates and seeing an NCAA bracket which includes three teams that you beat this year.
Unbelievable is the fact that I will never pull on a Bearcat jersey again.
