It’s pretty tough to take all of the great memories over the course of a year and come up with the top 10 moments. It’s even tougher to then rank those moments in order of significance. Nevertheless, that’s what we get paid to do. Here’s Pipe Dream’s 2005-06 top 10 moments of the year:
10. Finally, wrestling has come back to Binghamton: Nov. 17
Any time Billy Baldwin is in attendance, it’s a top moment. The wrestling program received a $230,000 state grant to return to action after a one-year layoff due to budget restraints, and the Bearcats’ first home match drew 549 passionate fans to the West Gym.
9. Upset of the year: Oct. 9
The volleyball team pulled off BU’s greatest upset of the year when Katie Brody slammed down back-to-back kills against conference-powerhouse Albany, with the score of game four knotted at 29, to remain undefeated in America East play.
8. Overtime thriller: Oct. 28
In the quarterfinals of the America East tournament, the women’s soccer team came from behind to defeat UMBC, with Kim Povill scoring the game-winner for the defending champions seven minutes into sudden-death overtime.
7. Sigh of relief: March 10
Before the women’s basketball season, seniors Rachel Laws, Jen Haubrich and Jen Blues said they wouldn’t graduate with a 0-4 postseason record. Despite trailing by six points with 45 seconds to go in the AE quarterfinals two months ago, the trio steered the Bearcats to an unbelievable comeback, and their first-ever playoff win.
6. And the fans storm the court: Jan. 25
The men’s basketball team pulled off a 61-60 double-overtime victory over Vermont in front of 4,450 fans at the Events Center. Even though there wasn’t a dramatic game-winner (Vermont cut the deficit to one with a three-pointer in the final seconds), the BU Zoo still rushed the court to celebrate with their heroes.
5. BU drowns defending champs: Nov. 5
It all came down to the final race. Brian Koralewski, Trevor Stone, Wade Rimbach and David Holmes touched first in the 400-free relay — the final race of the meet — to propel the BU swim team over two-time defending conference champion UMBC at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center.
4. Record-setting crowd: Oct. 14
Approximately 680 fans packed the West Gym on a Friday night to watch their undefeated volleyball team battle Maine for first place in the America East. The record-setting crowd gave BU the extra boost it needed, as the Bearcats won a thrilling five-game match in front of the packed house.
3. Emotional Senior Day: April 20
Down by one point with 48 seconds to go in overtime, Andre Heard fed fellow men’s basketball senior Sebastian Hermenier for the game-winning three-pointer on Senior Day. Making the win even more emotional, forward Duane James was carried off the court on a stretcher after suffering a neck injury with 1:05 remaining in regulation.
2. Biggest save of the year: Nov. 5
Ryan Bertoni made the biggest save of his life with the men’s soccer season on the line. The America East quarterfinals came down to the second round of the penalty kick shootout when Bertoni made the decisive save, leading to a wild celebration between the fans and players at West Gym Field.
1. America East champs!: Nov. 19
The BU volleyball team wasn’t expected to even make the America East tournament, let alone win it all. On Nov. 19, the Bearcats won the school’s only conference title of 2005-06, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and Pipe Dream’s top moment of the year.
