For weeks, the BU basketball coaches scouted the Maine Black Bears. And as usual, they coached their teams from the sidelines.

But then, after the games were played and the wins were in the books, they helped in the fight against cancer.

In honor of Coaches vs. Cancer this weekend, Walker and Conover made contributions to the cause after their teams hosted Maine at the Events Center. The men’s and women’s basketball head coaches pledged to donate $3 each for every point the two teams combined to score.

“Coaches vs. Cancer is a great event,” Conover said. “It’s such a worthy cause and it’s great we can support that effort.”

The National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society created Coaches vs. Cancer in 1993. The organization was founded by legendary coach Jim Valvano, who died at the age of 47 after a yearlong battle with cancer.

“Rich and I are just a couple of grains of sand in the big picture,” Walker said, “but we’re honored to be a part of it.”

The men wound up scoring a season-high 84 points while the women chipped in 69.

“It was our best point total of the year and the women scored 69,” Walker said. “It was awesome. It was a great day for the organization.”
