Senior guard Ashley Underwood scored 19 points and drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:32 remaining in the fourth quarter to complete a Maine comeback and defeat Binghamton, 59-56, in the women’s basketball game Saturday at Alfond Arena in Maine.
The Bearcats trailed by as many as nine in the second half, but roared back into the game sparked by 3-pointers from senior guard Rebecka Lindgren and junior guard Laura Sario. A free throw from Sario then gave Binghamton a 50-49 lead with 4:36 to go.
The Bearcats held the lead for the next three minutes, with both teams trading two-point baskets before Underwood’s three gave Maine the lead for good at 54-52.
Sario led the Bearcats with 18 points, while junior forward Brianna Thompson added 12 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Laura Franceski matched a season-high with five blocks.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 17-8 lead to open the game, but after a furious Maine comeback, led by just one at halftime.
Maine used a 9-0 run early in the second half to take control before the Bearcats came back again.
Binghamton had the ball with 11 seconds left in the game, but could not get a shot off.
The loss drops the Bearcats to fifth place in the conference, just half a game ahead of Boston University and UMBC, who are tied for seventh. With the victory. Maine takes sole possession of third place.
