In the wake of a peace activist’s visit to campus nearly two weeks ago, Binghamton University will soon become home to an international emblem that stands against war and violence.
Arthur Romano’s appearance on March 16 came with the gift of a Peace Pole, a 10-foot high obelisk with multilingual peace messages written on the sides, for the University.
Wolfman Productions, the agency Romano works through, has organized the ‘planting’ of Peace Poles all over the world. Peace Poles can be found on every continent with over 200,000 planted worldwide in 180 countries.
The monument features the message and prayer ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ on four sides. The first side will be in English and Spanish, the second side will be in Hebrew and Arabic, the third side will be in French and Hausa and the fourth side will be in Hindi and Chinese.
The Student Association, which is in charge of coordinating BU’s participation in the event, is attempting to reach an agreement as to when and where the pole will actually be planted. David Bass, the current vice president for multicultural affairs and next year’s president, said he is pushing for the Peace Quad as the pole’s permanent home.
‘The Peace Quad is the obvious choice,’ he said. ‘In the past the University has been hesitant to involve student activities in the Peace Quad, but I think this is an exception that needs to be made.’
According to Karen Fennie, a spokeswoman for Physical Facilities, a request ‘ which has not yet been initiated ‘ would have to be filed with her department for any work to be done on the Peace Quad. A survey of the utilities in the area would also have to be completed before putting anything into the ground.
As for when the pole would be positioned, Bass said, if all goes well, he hopes during this year’s Spring Fling. Bass estimates that the obelisk should be arriving by mid-April.
