The Binghamton golf team will host the 19th annual America East Championship this weekend, starting Saturday at 12:50 p.m. at The Links at Hiawatha Landing, in Apalachin, N.Y. The tournament will resume Sunday at 8 a.m.
The stroke-play championship will be a 36-hole event divided over two days of 18 holes.
Hartford won its 11th championship last season in Boston with a 617, while the Bearcats were runners up with a score of 625. Hartford has been first or second in every league championship since 1998. Boston University rounds out the field.
Hartford is led by last year’s individual champion David Arnold and freshman Nick MacDonald, while Boston will turn to Michael O’Day, who finished second at last year’s championship.
The Bearcats will turn to reigning AE Golfer of the Week and senior Jeff Wolniewicz to try to capture the title.
Binghamton hosted the championship two years ago when then freshman Zach Vinal made it final by winning his first collegiate tournament with a 144.
This year the Bearcats enter the AE championship in a different situation than last season. Last year the Bearcats won back-to-back tournaments at the New England Invitational and the Rhode Island Invitational leading up to the conference championship.
But this season the Bearcats have struggled mightily. After a solid fall season, the team seems to have lost a step this spring, most recently placing 11th at the First Energy Invitational hosted by Akron.
Last season’s results were not ideal as the team had their two-tournament winning streak snapped by the Hawks. Those struggles continued three weeks later at the NCAA East Regionals in Orlando, Fla., where the Bearcats placed 26th out of 27 teams.
The weather conditions were horrendous at the championship last season, with the New England skies opening up and the temperature dipping into the 40s, throwing off everyone’s game. This weekend that should not be the case.
Weather in Apalachin is expected to be 62 degrees with sunny skies for both days this weekend. With the elements not being a factor, the America East will truly be won by the best team this season.
The match will be the last chance for BU fans to see seniors Jeff Wolniewicz, Aaron Ungvarsky and Thomas Hackett. Wolniewicz will graduate not only as one of the most accomplished golfers at BU, but also as one of the most accomplished athletes overall in school history.
Tee off on Saturday will start with the No. 5 golfers on each team at 12:50 p.m. The next golfers will then tee off in 10-minute increments culminating in the tee off for No. 2 Vinal at 1:20 p.m. and No. 1 Wolniewicz at 1:30 p.m. On Saturday the tee-off order will be Hartford followed by Binghamton and Boston.
The course is located at 2350 Marshland Rd. To get to the course from campus, go west on Vestal Parkway for 11.7 miles and then turn right on Marshland Road.
