Everything appears to be going Boston’s way in the wide world of sports. Boston College is rising up the BCS rankings, the Boston Red Sox just won their second World Series in four years, the New England Patriots are ripping every secondary in the NFL to shreds and the Boston Celtics appear to be the only legitimate team in the NBA’s Eastern Conference thanks to the addition of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.
So really, the 2-0 blank sheet recorded by Boston University (9-6-3, 6-1-1 America East) over the Binghamton women’s soccer team (3-11-3, 2-5-1) this weekend in Boston shouldn’t have come as a shock on a day when the entire Boston area was rioting ‘ I mean celebrating.
The game was an even contest, although the score and shot totals both being in Boston’s favor might hint otherwise. The difference was Boston’s ability to convert two restarts into goals: one a corner kick in the 33rd minute, which got volleyed into the lower right corner of the net by the Terrier’s Courtney Brown, and the nail in the coffin being a free kick from Boston’s Marisha Schumacher-Hodge that found the upper-right corner in the 70th minute.
Despite the two goals allowed, BU sophomore Jen McEachron had a fine performance in net, saving eight of the 10 shots on goal and withstanding the 14 shots Boston took in the second half.
‘I thought we played decent today,’ Binghamton coach Jeff Leightman said. ‘It was pretty even in the first half. The difference in the game was restarts. They scored both goals on the restarts and that’s in part why they are one of the top teams in the region. I was proud of our players, though. It was a solid game.’
Despite finishing the regular season with a loss, the Bearcats made their way into the America East championship tournament for the fourth consecutive year thanks to Vermont’s 2-0 loss to Hartford. As the sixth seed in the America East, Binghamton will travel to Hartford, matching up against the third-seeded Hawks in the quarterfinals on Nov. 1. The last time these two faced each other on Oct. 2, the Hawks shutout the Bearcats 2-0.
‘We’re excited to be in [the tournament],’ Leightman said. ‘Our goal was to make the playoffs and we have done that. Hartford is a very good team but we know we can play with them.’
As was illustrated by the Colorado Rockies in the MLB postseason, regular season numbers get thrown out the window when playoff time rolls around. It’s all about making it into the playoffs and then who can be the best in the current moment.
‘The seeding is just a number,’ Leightman said. ‘Postseason is new life for us.’
