A tale of two IDs

SUNDAY, OCT. 1, 4:30 a.m. — Binghamton’s New York State University Police stopped a cab with a female student as a passenger in an early-morning field-sobriety checkpoint at the Campus Information Booth. When an officer asked for her identification, she gave him two — identifying her as two different people. It was unclear if she was intoxicated. She complied when asked to step out of the cab, but then got back into the car before the officer were done with her. When the officer tried to talk her into getting back out of the car, she rolled up the window. “She just didn’t want to listen anymore,” said University Police Investigator Matt Rossie. The student was then “escorted” back out of the cab. When police finished identifying her, they referred her to the campus judicial system. She chose to walk back to her campus dorm rather than take the cab the rest of the way.

Bongs — but no babies

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 4, 12:11 a.m. — An officer driving by BU’s Nature Preserve observed one female and two males near a maintenance shed, who began to retreat suspiciously into the preserve when they realized they had been observed. The officer parked and approached the individuals, and noticed a brown corduroy bag leaning against the shed. When asked if the bag belonged to them, all three students denied ownership — giving the officer the right to search the bag as “lost property.” The officer found a bong with a leafy green substance inside — and a pack of birth control pills. At that point, the female, 18, confessed to owning the bag. She was referred to the campus judicial system.

Yakko, Wakko … and Big Bear?

THURSDAY, OCT. 5, 11:41 p.m. — Police found six cars blocking the entrance to the Water Tower in the Nature Preserve, near Bunn Hill Road. When officers approached the tower, six males ran off into the woods and four stayed behind; the stragglers, and one of the runners — who said fleeing was a “natural reaction” — were identified by police. “They said there was no alcohol present,” Rossie said — “and when they say that, you know there’s alcohol.” Officers found two 40-ounce bottles of beer. Meanwhile, police intercepted five people leaving the Nature Preserve with “wet pant legs.” They admitted to being at the water tower earlier with the others. The 10 were referred to the campus judicial system.

Just Chalk It

FRIDAY, OCT. 6, 4:56 a.m. — A 17-year-old male BU student left his wallet in a taxi. The taxi driver returned it to a gate guard, who passed it on to police. Inside officers found a forged New York State driver’s license. The student went to the Couper Administration building to pick up his wallet the next day, and upon his 2 p.m. arrival he was issued an appearance ticket for the forgery. “You will always get arrested with a fake license,” Rossie said. He will appear in court Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
