Between the “Happy Hour,” “Start Biting Chumps” and “Naughty Gifts” applications, it can be hard to remember that there are useful Facebook applications out there — like the new CBSSports.com’s Tournament Brackets.
CBSSports and Facebook have combined to provide “The Official NCAA Tournament Brackets” for Facebook users and college basketball fans this March Madness.
The application will let users predict who will compete in each stage of the 32-team tournament and compare their choices with others, as previous applications did, but with enhanced features.
Users will be provided all of the detailed aspects of CBSSports.com’s game-tracker, including in-game and automatically updating scores. Using the familiar Facebook Web site, members can make brackets public or private, giving users the choice to compare picks with other users in the same network.
Users can even trash talk each other on the “Smack Talk Wall” straight from their cell phones via the new mobile feature.
“I can’t wait to laugh and gloat when my friends lose in the first round,” said junior Jason Birriel.
A press release said the application will give Facebook users the most in-depth coverage on all things March Madness, from not only CBS Sports and CBSSports.com, but from College Sports television and NCAA.com as well. Links to watch live games through the NCAA March Madness on Demand service will also be provided, another step up from last year’s applications.
“I joined the Facebook [NCAA] bracket last year, but I didn’t really like it,” said sophomore Mark D’Agostino. “But now that CBSSports.com took it over [the bracket] should be much better.”
Both parties involved in the partnership receive a boost — Facebook upgrades its bracket, while CBS also branches out to new customers.
“I’ve never really done a CBS bracket before but if it is anything like ESPN it seems really cool,” Birriel said.
Over 2.6 million Facebook users competed in Facebook’s tournament system last year.
In a press release, senior vice president and general manager of CBSSports.com, Jason Kint, said Facebook’s popularity made the move logical.
“Working with Facebook, an extremely viral social utility with a tremendous core of both college students and alumni was a natural solution as we looked to build a brackets application around the most popular college sports tournament,” Kint said.
