What do the New York baseball Giants, the New England Patriots and Binghamton University men’s soccer have in common? Multiple championships in four years. That being said, this year’s Bearcats were having trouble putting up the offense statistics that screams ‘dynasty.’ That all ended Saturday.
The men’s soccer team notched three goals against Cornell, and they have sophomore Cameron Keith to thank. Keith dominated the opposition scoring all of the Bearcats’ goals and posted the Bearcats’ first hat-trick in the Division I era.
In the first half, Keith scored from 12 feet out after receiving a cross from teammate Justin Leskow. For his second goal, the sophomore forward beat a defender to the ball and pushed it just inside the opposite post for his second goal. With help from midfielders Barry Neville and Cody Germain, Keith hammered the proverbial nail in the coffin just two minutes later.
The reason you probably haven’t heard of Keith before is because he is a transfer student from Aberdeen University in Scotland and he has been sidelined for most of this season.
‘The very first game of the season this year, he took a knock and was out five games, six games,’ explained head coach Paul Marco.
But despite the early injury, Marco was not surprised by Keith’s stunning success on Saturday.
‘We went over [to Scotland] and watched him and liked him a lot, and thought he would do just that [score goals],’ Marco said.
In Scotland, Keith played two years in the Scottish Highland Football League. The 6-foot Scot led his team last year with 26 goals. Last year, the Bearcats scored only 20 goals the entire season. In addition, the fact that members of last year’s team, Peter Sgueglia, Bryan Arnault, Joey Neilson and Ibrahim Yusuf, who combined for 10 of the Bearcats’ 20 goals last season, all graduated and left much to be desired offensively. The team was looking for someone to step up and produce goals, and it seems that Cameron Keith is just that man.
‘I see him being a guy who can really make a difference in the match for us,’ Marco said.
To top things off, even after his three-goal feat, Keith still has more potential. The injury that kept him sidelined at the beginning of this season still hampers him.
‘He’s just now coming back into form,’ Marco said. ‘His fitness still needs to improve.’
It’s pretty safe to say that before Saturday’s game, only soccer aficionados here in Binghamton had ever heard of the name Cameron Keith, but after his stomping of Big Red, Keith may be forever etched into the minds of Bearcat hopefuls.
