Are you looking for something to do this Saturday night, something a little more cultural and artistically stimulating than a frat party? If this is the case, then head down to Johnson City for the closing reception of ‘Set in Concrete,’ an exhibition that has been running for the past month at the local contemporary art venue, Spool MFG.

The gallery consists of visual art from 21 New York City musicians. The lineup of artists includes Nick Zinner, guitarist of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Lee Rinaldo of Sonic Youth (also a graduate of Binghamton University). The art on display is a wide range of painting, photography, drawing and video installations.

The exhibit has been open for public viewing since Sept. 1, yet at the closing this weekend there will be a special addition to the works of art. Select artists will accompany their work with musical performances. Unfortunately, Zinner and Rinaldo will not be included in the lineup; however, the three artists scheduled to perform, Aurelio Valle, Moh Azima and Jason Friedman, should put on a good show.

Valle plays guitar and sings for the indie rock band Calla. Azima, a director, has created music videos for many bands, including the Hold Steady. Jason Friedman is guitarist, vocalist and songwriter of his band, the Boggs.

This Saturday will be your last chance to see ‘Set in Concrete’ and your only opportunity to witness the live performance art. So do something different this weekend and check out Spool. If you really can’t miss out on the Downtown scene, don’t worry. The show ends at 10 p.m.

The doors open at 7 p.m. Spool MFG is located at 138 Baldwin St. in Johnson City. A small donation is requested at the door. Directions and more information are available at spoolmfg.org.
