The Roommate” stars Leighton Meester from “Gossip Girl” and Minka Kelly – whose main claim to fame is being Yankees star Derek Jeter’s girlfriend – as two college freshmen, assigned to live together for their first year. Though the two begin the semester as friends, it is soon established that one of the girls, Rebecca (Meester), is emotionally unstable and psychologically deranged. She becomes obsessively attached to her roommate, Sara (Kelly), and will stop at nothing to convince her they are destined to be best friends.
It is difficult not to notice the similarities between the two lead actresses in the film. Meester and Kelly are, in short, total doppelgangers and the intentional casting certainly adds to the creepiness factor of the film. Also weird are the scenes in which Meester’s character lights a man on fire, attacks a fellow classmate in the shower and intently watches her roommate sleep, but those are probably just the starting points in what is sure to become a very rocky relationship.
The psychological thriller is Danish director Christian E. Christiansen’s first American piece, and was filmed at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. The backdrop of a real American university was used to convey that this situation can happen to anyone at any school.
The film’s tagline reads, “2,000 colleges. 8 million roommates. Which one will you get?”
In reality though, if you get stuck with a homicidal maniac, you should probably just request a room change.
“The Roommate” hits theaters on Feb. 4, 2011.
