Renovation plans for Newing College and Dickinson Community ‘ which are both going to be entirely demolished and rebuilt ‘ are still in the works after a meeting this past Friday with the Planning and Steering Committee of the project.

The project, which is not set to begin until either the fall or the spring of 2008, calls for the complete reconstruction of the communities, one building at a time. According to Dave Belsky, executive vice president of the Student Association, who sits on the committee, the real decisions right now are between suites and traditional dorm-style housing and between semi-private and community bathrooms.

An article in Pipe Dream about the plans in December 2005 said that officials had yet to decide if the renovation would mean gutting the buildings or demolishing them.

‘Right now the track is to rebuild ‘ Belsky said about the current plans. ‘It’s going to be done in phases, so there will only be one semester where there will be less beds available.’

The next step in the process is the final recommendation of a plan by the Planning and Steering Committee, which will then be sent to University President Lois DeFleur. A follow-up meeting is set for this week, during which the architects for the project will present some final numbers and sketches and a final decision may be made.
