Binghamton University students may feel they need to head home to experience art and culture. But really, all they need to do is know where to look.
The ART Mission Theater is a non-profit organization that supports the contemporary arts. The theater focuses on independent films and maintains a gallery that has become very well-known to visual artists in the area. Works in the gallery range from paintings and photography to sculptures and installations ‘ these exhibitions are free to the public. The theater also offers special arts-related events and programs.
‘Our main motto is ‘Growth in Greater Binghamton Through Art Experience,’ said Anna Kovach, the executive director of the theater and a BU graduate. ‘The Gallery is very diversifying and we try to get films that make you think or have to do with issues in the area.’
The theater dates back to the 1920s, when it was located in Downtown Binghamton on Vestal Avenue. In the 1980s, Richard Kruce, a BU cinema graduate, purchased the theater and used it to show and support independent films. When the original theater was destroyed by a fire in 2004, the project was adopted by the Southbridge Arts and Business Community (SBAC). Since then, a new theater has carried on its legacy.
The newly renovated ART Mission, located on 61 Prospect Ave., hopes to revive appreciation of the visual arts and serve as an opportunity for the community to come together for a cause.
Planning an event? The gallery and the theater can be rented for special gatherings like small weddings or film showings. You can also buy books, DVDs and CDs through its website to support The ART Mission.
