Week 3 Fantasy Recap:
Here’s a breakdown of 10 of the top players in fantasy football last week, with stats courtesy of ESPN Fantasy Football scoring:
Michael Vick: Once again, Vick has proven to us he can still play this game at a highly competitive level. After Andy Reid’s coaching debacle, he finally made the right (although controversial) decision and has given his team the best possible chance to win games. This week he led all fantasy scorers with 32 points, throwing for 291 yards, three throwing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Since his stint as the Eagles’ starter began, he has opened up the running game (as opposing defenses now have to respect Vick’s ability to make plays with his feet) and LeSean McCoy has since been profiting from one fewer linebacker who is tasked with spying the weak side of every play.
Anquan Boldin: Boldin was incredibly effective against the Browns this week, catching eight passes out of 11 targets for 142 yards and three touchdowns, for 32 fantasy points. He is thriving in the slot on his new squad, and although Derrick Mason’s performance has been hurting, Joe Flacco is spreading the ball around with confidence. If Flacco can keep his INT total to a minimum, the Ravens’ pass offense will be able to bail out the rushing attack of Ray Rice and Willis McGahee.
Adrian Peterson: After getting stuffed at the goal line last week, Peterson regained some dignity in a big way, leading the Vikings to their first victory of the season. With 23 carries for 160 yards and two touchdowns, and five catches for 30 yards, Peterson totaled 31 fantasy points.
Austin Collie: Collie had a breakout game in the midst of a hurting Colts receiving corps, totaling 12 catches out of 16 targets for 171 yards and two touchdowns, for 29 fantasy points.
Lance Moore: Just like Colts receivers, Saints receivers are hit-and-miss in the fantasy realm, as Peyton Manning and Drew Brees in their pass-first offenses spread the ball around to everyone equally. However, every once in a while, one of them has a big game, and Lance Moore made a huge impact on Reggie Bush’s absence (returning punts as well as receiving). Moore had six catches out of seven targets for 149 yards, two touchdowns and a 72-yard punt return, good for 26 points.
Seahawks D/ST: Sort of a surprise ‘player,’ the Seahawks’ defense (which always starts with 10 fantasy points at the beginning of each game) had two kicks returned for touchdowns (by Leon Washington, for a total of 253 yards), three fumble recoveries, two interceptions and, despite giving up 20 points, they ended with 26 points.
Peyton Manning: Not a surprise here. Manning once again showed the precision with which he plays, carving up the Broncos’ defense (although Champ Bailey held Reggie Wayne in check for most of the game), completing 27 of 43 passes for 325 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions for 25 points.
Phillip Rivers: In the Chargers’ loss to the Seahawks, Rivers completed 29 of 53 passes for a massive (but not Matt Schaub-like) 455 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, totaling 24 points.
Chris Johnson: Anyone with basic football knowledge could have called this performance. Johnson was back to workhorse status quo against the Giants’ ailing defense this week, with 32 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns, totaling 24 points.
Roy Williams: I don’t really think anyone saw this coming, but Williams finally had a two-touchdown game with the Cowboys, along with five catches out of six targets for 117 yards for a total of 23 points.
