Though their men’s team will be playing for the America East title on Saturday, Albany’s women’s basketball team (8-21, 4-12 AE) will be fighting to get itself into the conference tournament when it takes on the New Hampshire Wildcats (9-19, 4-12 AE) in the play-in game on Thursday night. The matchup will feature two teams that finished tied for last place in the America East.
After a disappointing season, the Great Danes have something to prove this weekend. They will be playing to avoid becoming the first team eliminated for the second consecutive year, after losing in the play-in game last season to eighth-seeded Maine.
Despite its poor record, Albany does have some weapons, including freshman guard Charity Iromuanya, who has been electric in the 12 games she’s started. On the year, she shot 42 percent from the field and led her team with 46 steals. Also starting will be junior forward Gia Sanders, a talented defender who accumulated 49 blocks this year ‘ 35 more than her closest teammate.
The play-in game is scheduled for Thursday night at 8 p.m. at the Events Center.
