Aceyalone is a pretty ill lyricist. His flow is smooth, his rhymes clever, and his delivery makes for exciting music. On his latest album, “Magnificent City,” he collaborates with kick-ass producer RJD2. If you want to know what RJD2 is like, think Moby, only instead of totally lame he’s completely sweet.
First and foremost, this album is fun. It boasts complex, atmospheric beats conceived in the ultra-creative mind of RJD2. The samples on tracks like “Fire” are awesome, and RJD2 proves once again why he’s in high demand.
Aceyalone brings his A-game as well. His rhymes are tight, strung together intelligently, even on the often-rapped-about topic of marijuana. He tells stories easily with his charismatic styling, and the whole album sounds like it was fun to make.
The second half of the album isn’t quite as good as the first, unfortunately, and sometimes the beat seems just slightly lacking that certain quality that RJD2 is known for on his solo albums. Overall, though, it’s a good album, well deserving of your listening time.
